Dear reader, There are always many things going on at WACQT. During the last two months there has been several high level visits. For example we have has visits by the board of AstraZeneca, the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI), CEOs from the Stena group, and the Ambassador of Columbia together with representatives from SAAB. Within EDU-WACQT we also organised a Teachers Network for education in quantum technology. For me personally, my role as the director of WACQT is coming to an end since I stepped down in December. Therefore, this is a good time to thank everyone in WACQT for these seven years. Thank you for all your hard work and for making WACQT a success. Knowing that Göran Johansson will take over as director, I am confident that WACQT is in good hands, I wish him all the best for the future.

THEME: Quantum technology & rare-earth doped crystals
| Rare-earth doped crystals are ideal for quantum applications because of their unique electron configuration. They are also vital for high-tech applications like magnets, batteries, and lasers. Advancements in Rare-earth materials can lead to significant innovations and have substantial economic and strategic benefits, supporting both quantum technology and high-tech industries. | Researchers at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden and at the University of Magdeburg in Germany have developed a novel type of nanomechanical resonator that combines two important features: high mechanical quality and piezoelectricity. Recognized on prestigious lists
| WACQT researchers have been recognized on the prestigious IVA 100-list, highlighting their contributions to quantum technology. Additionally,
SCALINQ, addressing quantum computing scaling issues, is featured on the 33-list for its innovative solutions. | | | | | Having reached roughly half-time of WACQT, it is a good moment to put the focus on all the talented PhD students that have graduated. Since the start, 23 PhD students - university and industrial – have successfully defended their theses. Moreover, two students have defended their licentiate theses. After finalized doctoral studies the WACQT alumni have continued their careers in both industry and academia. The PhD students having graduated to date are David Hill, Marina Kudra, Junior Gonzales, Pontus Vikstål, Shahnawaz Ahmed, Yu Zheng, Alvaro Alarcón, Mårten Skogh, Mats Tholén, Maryam Sanaee, Emil Håkansson, Alessandro Prencipe, Oliver Hahn, Martin Ankel, Christopher Warren, Janka Biznarova, Hampus Renberg-Nilsson, Robert Jonsson, David Fitzek, Jiaying (Claire) Yang, Amr Osman, Basudha Srivastava, Anna Olofsson and Marika Svensson. The WACQT graduate school will in the coming years work to establish an alumni network connecting present and former WACQT PhD students.

Teachers Network - Platform for exchange and learning
| On November 19-20, the EDU-WACQT teachers network held its first in-person meeting. The network is for university teachers involved in quantum technology education across Sweden. The aim is to foster collaboration among educators to improve the quality and reach of quantum technology education.
| | | | | EDU WACQT offers funding to support the development of new courses in quantum technology. This initiative aims to enhance quantum technology education by creating innovative and comprehensive course materials. Researchers and educators can apply for funding, detailing their course development plans. Deadline: January 20, 2025. | | | WACQT offers funding for up to 12 summer internships in quantum technology, lasting up to 2.5 months. Researchers must apply, detailing the project and specifying the duration. Projects should enhance QT education and support early career researchers. Funding covers salary costs, with reimbursement in 2026. Deadline: January 31, 2025.

ConScience at the testbed. | The Testbed welcomes new collaborations, including ConScience’s QiB0 qubits—Swedish-made, world-class qubits coupled to resonators, ideal for benchmarking and calibration—and Scalinq’s LINQER and CliQ components, designed to address scaling challenges in quantum processors. The testbed joins the QSIP (Quantum Sweden Innovation Platform), a Swedish initiative aimed at stimulating and promoting innovation in quantum technology to support the
development of a globally competitive and attractive industry in Sweden. | | | | |
Research and Innovation Bill 2024
| The government’s proposal outlines research and innovation policy for 2025–2028, aiming to make Sweden a top research and innovation country. The 2025 budget proposal includes increased funding for these areas.
Part of the funding via the Swedish Research Council is earmarked for quantum technologies, and part is implied for that via the strategic technology reports from VINNOVA (see links below under “New Reports”).
